This Day in History
Did you know today is the 75th Anniversary of the Dambusters Raid?
Operation Chastise: RAF Unit 617 Squadron, led by Wing Commander Guy Gibson, bombed the Mohne, Eder and Sorpe dams in the Ruhr Valley with bouncing bombs! Two of the dams were breached and a third badly damaged.
However, Eight British aircraft were lost and of the 133 men sent out, 53 were killed and three taken prisoner.
All, deservedly, were celebrated as heroes. 33 of the men were decorated. Guy Gibson won the Victoria Cross but sadly, in September 1944, he was shot down and killed aged just 26.
Now aged 96, the last surviving Dambuster is bomb-aimer George “Johnny” Johnson MBE.
George, we salute you, you are our hero!
