22nd June: On this Day in History:
1342: Bilbo Baggins (of “The Hobbit” by JRR Tolkien) in his fifty-second year, returned to his home at Bag End, the Shire with the One Ring.
1377: Richard II succeeded Edward III as King of England. Richard was Edward’s grandson and only 10 years old when he was crowned king.
1675: The Royal Greenwich Observatory was established by Charles 11 in England.
1847: First ring doughnut was alleged to have been created by sailor, Captain Hanson Gregory aboard his ship.
1910: The flight of the first Delag Zeppelin dirigible airship, Deutschland, with 12 passengers & crew departed from the Friedrichshafen airfield at 3:00 in the morning on a nine-hour flight to Dusseldorf in Germany, a distance of 279 miles.
1911: King George V was crowned King of the United Kingdom of Great Britain (and Ireland, Canada, Australia, South Africa, New Zealand, and all his realms and territories beyond the sea).
1934: Depression era gangster, John Dillinger (co-incidentally born 22nd June 1903) who operated with a group of men known as the Dillinger Gang and was described as America’s first Public Enemy number 1, was shot dead in Chicago, Illinois aged 31.
1939: Princes Elizabeth (future Queen Elizabeth II) aged just 13 met her future husband Prince Philip of Greece (Midshipman Mountbatten, RN) aged 18 for the first time at the Royal Naval College in Dartmouth, Devon.
1977: Walt Disney’s “The Rescuers” was released. This was the 23rd Disney animated film and was about an international mouse organisation called the Rescue Aid Society. The film was based on a series of books by Margery Sharp.
1979: In order to pursue religion, Little Richard quit rock & roll.
1981: John McEnroe (labelled “Superbrat” by tabloid newspapers) exhibited disgraceful behaviour at Wimbledon shouting at the umpire: “You can’t be serious, man. You CANNOT be serious! That ball was on the line! Chalk flew up! It was clearly in! You guys are the absolute pits of the world…”
1982: Prince Charles and Princess Diana took their day old, first born son Prince William (second in line to the thrown) home from hospital.
1984: Richard Branson’s Virgin Atlantic Airways commenced operations with a flight from Gatwick, England to Newark, USA.
1990: Florida, the Sunshine State, passed a law which prohibits wearing a thong bathing suit in state beaches – No mankinis there then!
